Hari Om!

We started the class with opening prayers. We revised the previous alphabets and then learned two new alphabets. They are:

ई (ee) - ई ख (eekh) - Sugarcane
उ (u) - उ ल्लू (ulloo) - Owl

We also revised colors and numbers until 11 in hindi. The next class is on Nov. 17th and there will be a small test in Hindi. We will testing them in the alphabets, colors, numbers, and tastes they have learned so far. Please have them practice the alphabets multiple times since they have 2 weeks break.

Ended the class with closing prayers.

We revised the rhyme, tastes, numbers etc. Children came up with additional tastes as part of their HW. They have learned खट्ठा (khatta) - Sour, मीठा (meetha)- Sweet, तीखा (teekha) - Spicy, कडुवा (kaduwa) - Bitter etc.

We learned a new alphabet इ (e)
इ (e) - इ म ली (Imli) - Tamarind.
We ended the class with closing prayers.

Please have them write the three alphabets learned so far multiple times. Will send the practice sheets via email.

Oct 20, 2013 Hindi Senior Class

हरि ॐ, नमस्कार !

In today's class we discovered that three of our new friends did not know the opening prayer ॐ सहनाववतु. We spend a few minutes repeating it and going over the meaning.

Parents, we urge you to please make some extra time in the morning and attend the assembly because it is an important part of learning for the kids. Please also send your kids prepared with a Hindi notebook to take notes in and an extra snack in case they get hungry!

We then reviewed the alphabets already covered and went over their sounds. We paid special attention to letters that look alike.

We did the letter क (sounds like c in the english word calm) and the words कमल (kamal meaning lotus), कलम (kalam meaning writing instrument) and कमरा (kamra meaning room).

We did ख (Sounds like kh in the english word khan). We did the word खरगोश (khargosh for rabbit).

We spent some time looking at the letter र that sounds like r in right and the letter व that sounds like v in the english word very. I explained how it is important to learn how to form your letters correctly. For instance, if we don't pay attention to the formation of the letter ख it can end up looking like रव

Next, we did ग that sounds like g in the english word gate. We learned the word गमला (gamala that means a flower pot or planter) We did the next letter घ which sounds like gh in the english word ghost. We paid special attention to the formation on this letter and differentiated it from the letter ध which sounds like dh in the name Gandhi. We did the word घड़ी ghadi in hindi that means watch or clock. We did the word धनुश dhanush in hindi that means bow. Lastly we did the last letter of this varga of consonants ङ from which no words begin. We looked at the word नंगा (nanga means naked) to see the use of this consonant in the middle of a word.

We went over the sounds of these consonants several times for clarity. 

Next week we will try to go over the closing prayer for the benefit of our new friends.

Homework : Write each letter क through द 5 times neatly in your hindi notebook. Enunciate the sound of each letter as you write to build familiarity with the sight and sound of each letter.

Hindi Senior Class (Oct. 6th 2013)

We learnt four more alphabets, one new word, and one phrase.  Once again, everybody completed their homework.  My goal is to finish all alphabets this week.  Most students came back with answer to a question.

Here is an update of the 10/6 Hindi Juniors Class.

We started of with a recap of earlier session. All kids confidently came up to the board introduced themselves in Hindi and wrote अ (A) & आ (Aa). They actively participated in recalling colors and counting numbers (1 - 11).

We had a circle time and watched a nursery rhyme "Garam Meethi Roti" and the kids learned learned to sing along.

We elaborated on the words of the rhyme and talked about various words Temperatures (Garam / Thanda), Sizes (bada/chota), Relatives (beta / beti, didi, behen, bhai, mataji, pitaji) and tastes (meetha, khatta, teekha, namkeen)

Please practice the nursery rhyme with them and reinforce the words we taught in class. Their home work is to find out 2 additional taste words

The kids were very active and enthusiastic i nthe class, They really seemed to like the rhymes. We will try to incorporate more of these audio visual aides. It is a pleasure to teach these children.

Hindi Class (Sept. 29th 2013)

Junior:
We have started writing alphabets.
अ (A) - अ ना र  Anaar (Pomegranate)
आ (Aa)  - आ म Aam (Mango)

We did numbers (orally) in Hindi upto 7. They also learned to say धन्यवाद (Dhanyawad) which means Thank you. Please practice these small words and the basic conversations covered earlier at home so that they don't forget and are prepared to learn something new in every class.

I have attached the practice worksheets for the first 2 alphabets in the email. You can print multiple copies of this and have them practice nicely. Please also help children with numbers. We will be continuing with numbers and alphabets next week as well.

Senior:
We continued with the alphabets and one sentence.  Please see below.
Every students completed their homework.  I have asked every student to find out how to reply in Hindi when someone asks you -  आपकी उम्र क्या है?  aapkee umr kyaa hai   (How Old are You?)

Hindi Class (Sept. 22nd 2013)

Junior:
Since we had 8 new kids, we went over some of the things we did last week. Colors, small conversations and learned numbers until 5 in Hindi. Next week, we will be learning more numbers and begin writing alphabets. Please practice the conversations, colors, and numbers with your children at home so that they don't forget.
