We combined the two classes and conducted  Individual Oral Assessments. Please review the assessment sheet. Help your child learn the words they did not know but more importantly applaud them for getting the ones they got correct. We also provided 'Aai Diwali' song copy. In the upcoming weeks, we will be practicing this song. We will go over the meaning of the words in the next class when we learn about 'Our festivals'. The children also learnt names of Body parts in Hindi (Hair, eyes, nose, ear, teeth, mouth, hands, legs and stomach. They stood up and were asked to 'Tap their

Hindi Senior Class - Sept 14, 2014

Arvind Agarwal and Jyoti Agarwal (not related to each other) are happy to teach Hindi Senior this year at BBNJ. In the first class week, the class consisted of 5 enthusiastic kids. During the class we reviewed vowels and consonants. All students have written these in their note books. If they didn't have notebooks they were provided paper and writing tools. They were also requested to write 5 three letter words and 5 four letter words. The expectation in this class is that the students have a limited base of vowels, consonants, Hindi speaking ability (limited) and ability to understand Hindi. We consider all students to be at an intermediate level rather than a senior level. For the next class, please ensure that students bring a notebook, sharpened pencils, eraser, and completed homework. If there are too few students on any particular day, Hindi Senior may be combined with the Hindi Junior class.

Regards,
Hindi Senior Teachers

Since we have a lot of material to cover during the year, please review what they learnt each week so that your child is able to move forward with the rest of the class. We will provide you with a syllabus copy in the upcoming weeks. We will also provide individual assessments for you to review the progress of your child as well. BBNJ Hindi Jr. 04/06/14

Hari Om!

Started the class with opening prayers. Since we finished all the vowels except ऋ , we are now moving onto consonants.

We started with क (ka) and ख (kha) yesterday.
क (ka) - कमल (Kamal) meaning Lotus
ख (kha) - खरगोश (Khargosh) meaning Rabbit.
We also discussed about their colors.

Some of the parents present in the class came up with words which begins with क and ख and the children had to identify the alphabet it starts with. If the word was of a fruit, we discussed their color and taste as well. If the word was of an animal, we discussed only their color.

Towards the end of the class, there was a test on vowels. Looking at their papers, children need more practice at home writing and practicing all those alphabets multiple times.

HW for next two weeks (as the next BV class is only on Apr. 27th):

1.Learn to write your name in Hindi. (Parents: please help your child with this)
2.Practice all the vowels at least 10-15 times each. (I'll check their notebook if they have done that, if not,        they will do the same in class). We cannot move forward if they do not remember the vowels properly.)
3.Practice writing the two new alphabets (Consonants) 5 times each.
4.Revise these two rhymes which they shall be presenting in the assembly sometime in May (TBD).

BBNJ Hindi Sr Feb 23, 2014

हरि ॐ, नमस्कार !
Last week, we were supposed to do a review of all the swar. None of our Hindi Sr. friends showed up!

This week we had three students and it was back to the building blocks with at least two of them. Remember, regular attendance, a review of what was taught and diligence with your homework are the keys to success!

This week we did the following vowels all over again along with matras.
We learned how to identify the beginning sound and whether it is a long or short vowel.
अ (A) - अ ना र  Anaar (Pomegranate)  No matra
आ (Aa)  - आ म Aam (Mango)
इ (e) - इ म ली (Imli) - Tamarind.
ई (ee) - ई ख (eekh) - Sugarcane
उ (u) - उ ल्लू (ulloo) - Owl
ऊ (oo) - ऊ न  (wool or yarn)
ए  (ae) - ए ड़ी (ankle) , ए क (one)
ऐ  (aae) - ऐ न क  (glasses)
Hindi Swar Chart

When the vowels follow a consonant or any of the non-vowel letters they will assume a different shape.  This shape is called a mātrā (मात्रI).Matras for these Swar look like this :

Hindi Vowels

We did a couple of examples of these Matras in conjunction with the vyanjan to see how they look.
We did the first six matras from the following list:
Please review these and review the rest of the vowels before next class.
Agle haftephir milenge.
धन्यवाद!

BBNJ Hindi Sr Feb 2, 2014

Hari Om,

Students are encouraged not to succumb to peer pressure but inform one of the teachers in the Teacher's Meeting if they find themselves without a teacher for any reason!

Today we had only 3 friends in class. We discovered that the long cold days of winter had erased some of the progress made in previous sessions and a review was in order. We reviewed what the Alphabet (Varnamala or Aksharmala) is called in Hindi as well as the Hindi names for Vowels (Svar) and Consonants (Vyanjan).

We reviewed all the svar we have done before - how to write, say and which words begin with that sound.

Students agreed to have a quiz next week on Svar. They are expected to know how to write, read, say and identify the sounds of each of the vowels. No written homework was given because of Superbowl but any practice needed by the students to master the material is their responsibility.
धन्यवाद!

Hello
How are you?
Have you done your homework?
Yes, I have done my homework (or No, I have not done my homework)
